Preparing for your first massage
How to Prepare for Your Massage
If you’re about to attend your first massage, you might be wondering what you should do to prepare, and what to expect when you arrive. There’s no need to worry; doing just a few things to prepare will make your massage relaxing, easy, and effective.
It’s a good idea to take a shower before your massage and ensure that your body is clean. This is a courtesy to your therapist and will make you more comfortable, too. Be sure any wounds are covered with a clean bandage. Avoid eating right before your massage; you’ll be more comfortable if you don’t have a full stomach.
Alcohol (or drugs) should be avoided before a massage, as one of the benefits of a massage is that it moves toxins around your body, so adding additional toxins will make you feel unwell.
When you arrive, be sure to tell your massage therapist about any health problems or allergies you might have, especially to lotions, oils, or powders, as these will likely be used during the massage. You should also note any muscle pain or areas of tension that you would like focused on during the massage. If you engage in repetitive activities, or sit at a desk all day, you may want to tell your massage therapist about these concerns. This may inform the way the therapist approaches your massage.
Before your massage, your therapist will leave the room in order to allow you to remove clothing up to your level comfort. Some people remove all clothing, while others prefer to leave their undergarments on for the massage. This is completely up to you! Note that whatever you decide, your massage therapist will have the utmost respect for your modesty and personal boundaries. And while you don’t have to talk unless you want to, if you have any questions or concerns during your massage, you’re highly encouraged to communicate these to the massage therapist.
Please do not be alarmed if you become aroused during your service, this is completely normal when in such a state of relaxation, your therapist is used to it, just relax and don’t draw attention to it.
You’re ready for your massage! All you have to do next is lay down on the table and relax!
Chances are, your first massage will be a relaxing, fulfilling experience that you’ll want to repeat again and again.
